Yeah, you read the title right, if you are a mom and your husband is the person that does the grilling in your house this post may just be for you. This will be your easy guide to grilling for the first time in three easy steps.
I love grilled food but never really mastered the skill of it and trust me I do believe it is a skill.
This advice today isn’t about mastering this skill of grilling number one; because I’m not a master.
This is my very bad advice that I would like for you to take when considering grilling for the first time.
Step 1 – The Grill
First, the choice is yours for charcoal, gas, or electric, I use a charcoal grill because I love the smokey flavor this type of grill gives.
Also, we are not fancy about the type of grill, especially since we live in an apartment and balcony grilling is what we do.
If you have a gas grill there are just some few adjustments that you will need to do differently to get you started.
But once the grill is hot cooking it making sure the meat is at the right temperature will pretty much be the same.
Make sure to remove the ashes from the last grilling session and prepare to clean the grill surface.
Step 2 – let’s Get It Hot
Second, when grilling for the first time, bring all of the coals and newspaper to the center using a small chimney starter. This is a better option than using lighter fluid to start the fire.
What I have learned is that using lighter fluid can affect the taste of the food and it’s bad for the environment.
Having a chimney starter takes the fear out of the big open flame when trying to heat a grill using lighter fluid.
I’ve never been comfortable with the big huge flame, one of the reasons I avoided the grill. But there is a much better way of doing this.
Using the chimney starter, crumble up some newspaper to the bottom of the starter, then fill to top with charcoal, then light it.
I keep the coals in the center to really build up the heat at first before spreading them, reducing the heat to medium. Then I just wait and let it burn.
Once the grill is heated you can then add the meat. To know if the grill is ready, look at the coals to see if they have turned gray ash.
I’m sure there is probably another way of checking for this, but like I said, I’m not an expert and this way works for me.
Step 3 – Add The Meat
Finally, it’s time to add your meat. Make sure to use a thermometer for checking your meat, the temperature it will vary depending on the type and cut of the meat you are grilling.
Here is a chart that will give you a general rule of safe temperatures for meat and seafood.
After the grill is heated use the grill brush to scrape off the old gunk. Then you will need to repeat this again, between removing the cooked meat and raw meat to cook.
Step 4 – The Conclusion
Grilling for the first time can be fun as well as work. Limit the number of times opening and closing the lid to avoid drying out your meat.
Go for the gusto by adding water-soaked wood chips onto the coals. This will give a wonderful smokey flavor to your food.
Here are some recipe ideas for grilling beside the usual chicken and beef. Get creative and surprise your family with your new grilling skills.
